Florida may be known for its sunshine (It is the Sunshine State, after all!), but it is also quite famous for its downpours – especially in the summer season when rain is quite frequent. One moment, you’re basking in all of the sun’s rays, and then in an instant, it’s pouring cats and dogs. Then, you blink, and blue skies are back in action – and all of this somehow takes place before you could even grab yourself a serving of Dole Whip!

How cautious should you be with preparing for the weather when travelling to WDW? What should you pack?

7 Ways to Prepare for Rain in Walt Disney World Resort

Here are seven tips on how to stay dry while visiting and what to do at Disney when it rains:

Check the Weather…. Or Not?

It’s always a good idea to check the weather, but don’t let any rain forecast deter you. When there is a chance of rain, it means that it can literally rain only 10 minutes during your day. My parents like to say that it is never grey all day in Florida, or at least, very rarely. Florida weather is incredibly unpredictable. Orlando can be quite cold in the winter, so I would suggest you check the forecast during that time (it is not rare that a jacket may be needed for January, for example).

But during the summer, it’ll be hot, humid and probably raining at some point. Get ready for this.

If there aren’t any thunderstorms, my advice is to keep moving. Chances are, it will be done soon enough. Plus, it usually empties the parks, so it’s a great chance to do a few more rides.

Some rides can close during the rain, just like the Test Track in Epcot. If you have a Genie Plus for a certain window and the ride is closed during your return time due to inclement weather, you should receive another Genie Plus valid for any other ride at any other time during the day, so check your My Disney Experience app.

Disney Rain Poncho

My family and I always purchase rain ponchos ahead of time (a lot cheaper on Amazon or Walmart than in the parks), and we keep them in our stroller or backpacks. You never know when you might get caught. They are easy to put on and can help you stay somewhat dry. I will never leave home without them!  Disney gift stores also sell ponchos, albeit at a little extra cost, but they can help if you are in a bind.

It’s also much better than having to carry a bulky umbrella (though they are allowed in the parks), which won’t do much against the torrential rain.

We like this option for kids and this one for adults.

Just be sure to dry them off at the end of the day to prevent mold and mildew – or buy a few cheap ones for each person in your group and simply dispose of them when done.

Ziploc Bags for Your Electronics.

We once killed our kid’s tablet (left at the bottom of the stroller) because it got drenched in the middle of a storm (there was water up to our ankles!). So, please learn from our mistake: bring plastic or Ziploc bags!

They can be easily carried in your backpack, and will be a life saver to keep electronics and valuables safe during rain and water rides.

Shower Caps, Rain Covers or Water Repellent Spray to Cover Shoes

Another good tip is to bring cheaply made shower caps or rain covers made for shoes to cover your shoes during a downpour. They can be great for water rides, too! They are a great alternative to bringing a second pair of shoes (a lot of people will bring flip-flops to wear for the water rides, for example). Bringing an extra pair can be cumbersome and not for everyone. Plastic shower caps and rain covers are light and easily packable.

We also recommend water repellent sprays to spray on your shoes. You can find them on Amazon or Wal-Mart!

Extra Pair of Socks!

It’s never a bad idea to bring an extra pair of socks, just in case your feet still somehow get wet. Even if they don’t, changing socks on a hot humid day after lots of walking may feel like heaven and be that one simple thing that will keep you going.

Small Towel

Though a small towel is not necessary, it can be quite useful to wipe down a seat or yourself after you’ve been wet. A small microfiber towel to absorb the water can work wonders on many things, and you will be surprised at how much you appreciate bringing it with you. They can also help cool you down during the sun’s peak hours: just drench it in cold water in the bathroom and put it around your neck, and voilà!

Stroller Rain Cover

If you have a stroller, rain covers are a great idea. If you rent your stroller, most often they come with it, or you have an opportunity to get the rain cover for an additional small fee (get it!). There are also fairly cheap ones on Amazon or Walmart.  You can put it on your stroller while you go inside for a ride if you think it will rain. This will keep it dry and comfortable for your kiddo.  If you are stuck, ponchos can work almost as well.

Don’t let a little rain deter you, sometimes, it can also be a short reprieve from the heat. There are many ways to power through with these easy tips!
